White Mountain National Forest (WMNF)
Bethel, Maine is located on the northeastern edge of the White Mountain National Forest (much of which lies in New Hampshire), on the quiet side of the White Mountains. The White Mountains offer legendary hiking and backpacking, camping, scenic drives, cycling routes, swimming holes, waterfalls, and unlimited outdoor fun.
The areas nearest to Bethel are Crocker Pond and Evans Notch, each about a 15-20 minute drive.
Pinkham Notch, the east side of Mt. Washington in the Presidential Mountains, and the location of the Appalachian Mountain Club headquarters is a 45-minute drive.
The nearest ranger station is the Androscoggin Ranger District office and visitor center, 300 Glen Road (Rt. 16), located 5 miles south of the town of Gorham, NH. The visitor center has regional information, many interpretive displays, and a retail area with maps, books, recreation passes and other items for sale. (603) 466-2713.
